Making ASCII art paste cleanly

ASCII art is a grid: every character must take the same width. Chat apps, email and word processors use proportional fonts where an i is thinner than an m, which shears the picture. Put it in a code block (```) or set the font to Consolas, Menlo or Courier New.

Backslashes are the other trap. Markdown treats \ as an escape character, so a cat's whisker can vanish. Inside a code block that never happens.

Questions people ask

How do I copy and paste ASCII art?

Tap Copy under any piece and paste it where you like. For the picture to stay aligned it must be shown in a monospace font – in Discord, Slack, Reddit and GitHub put three backticks (```) on the line before and after it.

What is the difference between ASCII art and text art?

Strict ASCII art uses only the 95 printable ASCII characters, so it works on any system back to the 1960s. "Text art" is broader and includes Unicode symbols, box-drawing lines, braille dots and kaomoji, which look richer but depend on the font having those characters.

What is one-line ASCII art?

Tiny drawings that fit on a single line, like ><((((º> or =^..^=. They don't need a monospace font, so they paste cleanly into chats and usernames. There is a full collection on the one-line ASCII art page.

Who made these pieces?

Many small ASCII pieces are decades-old Usenet and BBS folklore with no known author; others were drawn for this site. ASCII artists traditionally sign work with initials in a corner – if you share a signed piece, keep the signature.

Can I make my own ASCII art from a photo?

Yes – the image to ASCII converter turns any picture into characters in your browser, and the braille dot art generator does the same at higher resolution.
