It's not a font โ€“ it's a different character

When you "change the font" here, nothing about the font changes. Each styled letter is its own entry in Unicode, usually in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block that was added in Unicode 3.1 (2001) so scientists could tell a bold ๐ฏ vector from an italic ๐‘ฃ variable. Type a letter and compare the code points.

That extra byte count is why a 30-letter styled bio can bump into a 150-character limit sooner than you expect on some platforms, and why search engines and screen readers often treat fancy text as symbols instead of words.

Questions people ask

How does a fancy text generator work if I can't change fonts on Instagram?

It doesn't change the font. It swaps each letter for a different Unicode character that happens to look styled โ€“ for example ๐€ is "Mathematical Bold Capital A", U+1D400, a separate character from A. Because they are real characters, they survive copy and paste into bios, captions and usernames.

Is fancy text bad for accessibility?

It can be. Screen readers may read ๐“ฑ๐“ฎ๐“ต๐“ต๐“ธ as "mathematical bold script small h, mathematical bold script small eโ€ฆ" or skip it entirely, and search engines may not match it. Use it for a word or two of decoration, never for whole sentences or important information.

Why do some letters stay normal?

Unicode only encoded what mathematicians and typographers needed. Superscript q, several subscript letters and some small capitals simply do not exist, so the generator leaves them as they are or uses the closest look-alike.

Will fancy text work in usernames?

It depends on the platform. Instagram and TikTok display names generally allow it; many handles (@names) only accept basic letters, digits, dots and underscores. Discord allows most styles in display names.
